Best Man Selection
Choosing my Best Man is easy isn't it? A close friend who has known me for years, has plenty of stories to relay, is good for a laugh and likes a drink!
Think again - The Best Man is one of the most important roles, not only on the day but in the weeks leading up to the wedding. It isn't just about arranging the Stag Do and getting you to the wedding on time. It is so much more!
Choosing your Best Man should be a well thought through process. After all, this is the most important day of your life and a Best Man that will be overcome with nerves or worse, relay cringe worthy stories that no-one will find funny and leave your new bride heading for the hills are not the ingredients you are looking for.
So how do I choose and what do I look for? Here are a few words of wisdom to get you started!
What skills should you look for?
- Reliability is a must - it is a non starter if your Best Man can never get out of bed
- Trustworthy - he will be looking after your rings!
- Sense of Humour - always helps but not too much. Somebody that thinks everything is a laugh and takes nothing seriously could be good for a night out but not for this role
- Calming influence - nerves can take over you and you need a person with a strong disposition who can remain calm in a crisis.
- Confident - but not cocky. Someone who is comfortable with writing and delivering a speech. This is key. A speech that goes on and on and on can be dull and boring.
- Personable - a charmer but not in an arrogant way. Your Best Man will be on show and it always helps if he can get on with everybody and is well liked and known by the families.
- Problem Solving Skills - he needs to think quickly and be able to resolve issues should they arise.
Things to avoid when choosing your Best man
- Somebody who has had a close relationship with the Bride
- Someone not liked by either the Bride or your families
- Gets drunk and swears or shouts loudly
- Somebody with no organisation skills
- Someone who is embarrassing
- Don't pressurise someone to do it if they don't want the job!
Remember the Best Man will reflect on you - there may be family on the brides side who don't know you and you want to make a good impression. The Best Man can either help or hinder you. You may think it doesn't matter as you probably won't see half of these people again. It will matter to your bride who, no matter what she says, will care what people think, especially on your wedding day!

Yes, two is fine, more than that is tricky as they will all be standing at the front and you need to give some thought to speeches and who is responsible for what etc.
